"In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."
-Martin Luther King, Jr.
We always knew that James would be the first of the kids to get stitches. Instead he became the first of the kids to get staples. He was climbing on something he shouldn’t have at school and fell backwards, hitting his head on a toy when he landed. Off to the urgent care he went where he received 3 staples and a popsicle. He didn’t even cry when the staples went in. That’s a good thing, because I expect many more staples in James’ future.
We have a new set of ducklings at the pond and we thought it would be a good idea to take the kids out to see them. We also hoped it would work off some energy in order to give us a little peace at quiet/nap time. I’m sorry to say we failed in achieving either of our goals. The ducks were nowhere to be found and we found no peace back at the house. Oh well, maybe next weekend.
No Memorial Day weekend would be complete without swimming and hot dogs. And bubbles, you can’t forget bubbles. We enjoyed all these things at Nina’s and Papa’s on Sunday. We weren’t planning on going swimming because of James’ staples but once we were there we didn’t have a choice. The kids went in with the clothes they had on and ate dinner in towels while their clothes dried.
Even though we had fun this weekend we still want to keep the purpose of the day in mind. It’s a heavy thing to explain to a 6 and 3 year old, but we’ll keep explaining it to them every year until they understand.
"On this green bank, by this soft stream,
We set today a votive stone;
That memory may their deed redeem,
When, like our sires, our sons are gone.
Spirit, that made those heroes dare
To die, and leave their children free,
Bid Time and Nature gently spare
The shaft we raise to them and thee."
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
