Lakes, fireworks, and birthdays…

This was an eventful weekend for our little toddler.  On Saturday we took Ashlyn to Nena and Pa Pa’s new lake house on Lake Granbury.  Despite the cold, Ashlyn was fascinated by the water, I’m guessing because it was the most she had seen until then.  We took her down to the dock, showed her the water, ducks, and a few cranes, and she kept wanting to go back and see more.  She paused for a few minutes to play with the leaves, but then it was back down to the water.

We stopped in downtown Granbury on the way home to see some Christmas lights.  As Ashlyn was running around looking at the lights, she tripped on a cord and fell to the ground.  She didn’t cry, instead she got back up and started grabbing various light structures.  It was at this point that I realized I was not going to get the Parent of the Year award.  I had let her go under a fence, which should have been my first clue, and into an area filled with cords (my second clue).  Needless to say, we left that area and we managed to do it with no serious injuries.

Ashlyn got to see another first on the way back home, thanks to some incredible timing.  As we were driving back, we saw something flash off to our right.  It did it again, and we realized that there was a fireworks show.  We pulled over and we got a front row seat for a great fireworks show.  Nina, Pa Pa, Ashlyn, and I sat and watched the show until the finale was over.  Ashlyn really liked the fireworks.  She cried when I took her outside, thanks to the noise, but calmed right back down once we were in the car.

On Sunday we joined the Wolfe’s to celebrate cousin Heide and Uncle Bruce’s birthdays.  Ashlyn just went for the chips and salsa.

We had a lot of fun at the restaurant, and Ashlyn did really well.  She mostly spent her time spilling mommy’s sprite and re-arranging the sugar packets in the little sugar packet container.

The way home from the restaurant was not so fun.  Grandpa took Ashlyn out to his car and put her in the front seat while the rest of of packed everything up after the dinner.  Ashlyn was NOT happy about leaving the car and cried for all but the last minute of the ride home.  At one point, mommy got her calmed down and asked what was wrong.  Here’s how the conversation went:

  • Mommy:  “What’s wrong?”
  • Ashlyn:  “I want my Grandpa!”
  • Mommy:  “Grandpa went home Ashlyn.”
  • Ashlyn:  “…wwwwaaaAAAAAAAAA!”

In the end, she calmed down and was able to play until bedtime.  So yeah, it was a good weekend.
